If you find yourself on a journey near Albemarle County, you should hit the brakes. Whether you are
traveling solo or with family, there are so many reasons to visit and spend several days in Albemarle
County and Charlottesville. Only minutes away from the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia,
Charlottesville is a vibrant city infused with rich culture, history, outdoor activities, wineries, breweries,
and over 200 restaurants. We’d like to suggest our top five destinations to consider.
Comparable to culinary giants such as New York and San Francisco, Charlottesville is ranked fourteenth
in restaurants per capita – 22.8 per 10k (Huffington Post). This respectable ranking is why Charlottesville
should be considered a top culinary destination for your visit. If you are looking for a tasty classic burger,
try Riverside Grille (they’ve been flipping burgers since 1935). In the mood for great food and a local
brew? South Street Brewery will have you at hello with the smell of a roaring fire and their rustic
atmosphere, not to mention their genuine hospitality.
Let’s work off our meal with the next destination to consider: kayaking or fishing on the historic Rivanna
River. You can rent a kayak at Rivanna River Co. or bring your own. The Rivanna River is steeped in
natural beauty and provides a relaxing way to spend an afternoon.
Thomas Jefferson’s iconic home, Monticello, comes to mind for many when they think of Charlottesville.
This sprawling estate has the opportunity for history buffs, educators, and anyone that wants to step
back in time to walk the soil of our forefathers. If you have not made this journey, Monticello should be
on the list.
After Monticello, take a drive to Carter Mountain Orchard – be sure to check their seasonal produce
calendar for product availability. This experience is fun for the entire family – cider donuts, apple, and
peach picking, and live music! Carter Mountain has a Bold Rock taproom for those wanting to try out
seasonal drafts of the latest Bold Rock line-up. Bold Rock uses local apples from Carter Mountain to
produce its hard cider. Cheers to local!
Our last stop ends at the Downtown Mall – an outdoor destination full of local favorites and stylish
experiences in the heart of historic downtown Charlottesville. Walk from store to store on the brick-
paved pedestrian street or enjoy dining al fresco at one of the many unique restaurants.
Although these are only a few of our top picks, there is still plenty to do and to discover in Charlottesville
and Albemarle County. Heck, you might even decide to relocate here!
